FPV Flying in Winter 2026: LiPo Preheating, Conformal Coating, Goggle Fog - The Complete Cold Weather Protocol

Winter FPV in Poland means sub-zero temperatures, snow, condensation, and brittle plastics. None of these are show-stoppers with the right preparation. Here's the complete protocol.

The Four Winter Challenges

Winter FPV has four distinct challenges compared to other seasons. Each has a specific solution. Knowing which applies to your session determines what you actually need to prepare.

Challenge Condition Solution
LiPo capacity loss Any temperature below 15°C Pre-heat batteries, carry warmer
Electronics moisture damage Snow, rain, or condensation (warm car to cold air) Conformal coating on FC/ESC/RX/VTX
Goggle fogging Cold air + warm face Fan, anti-fog spray, warm goggle pre-flight
Brittle plastics and TPU Below -5°C consistently Fly conservatively, inspect TPU parts

LiPo Pre-Heating Protocol for Winter

  1. Transport batteries inside the car cabin - never in the boot in winter. Car heater keeps them at 15-20°C minimum during transit.
  2. Use a heated LiPo bag at the field if temperatures are below 0°C. Set to 30-40°C and keep all packs in it between flights.
  3. Fly the warmest pack first. Put the next pack in your inside jacket pocket - body heat maintains ~35°C.
  4. Land with more buffer than usual. Below -5°C, set your low-voltage alarm 0.2V higher than your summer setting. Cold cells sag harder.
  5. Never charge immediately after a cold flight. Bring packs inside to room temperature before putting them on the charger.

Conformal Coating: What It Is and When to Apply It

Conformal coating is a thin protective polymer layer applied to PCBs that repels moisture. In winter FPV, the risk is condensation: going from a warm car (20°C, high humidity) to cold air (-5°C) creates condensation on cold electronics. If you've ever had mysterious electrical failures on the first flight of a cold day, condensation is a likely cause.

Apply conformal coating to: FC, ESC, VTX/air unit (not the camera lens area), receiver. Avoid covering connectors and sensor ports. Don't coat motors - they can handle moisture and need airflow.

Apply conformal coating in a well-ventilated area and let it cure fully before powering the electronics. Read the product instructions for cure time - typically 24 hours for full cure. Apply thin, even coats rather than thick blobs.

If you don't want to coat permanently, an alternative: let electronics acclimatize to outdoor temperature before power-on. Bring the assembled quad outside 10-15 minutes before flying. Let condensation form and evaporate before powering up.

Goggle Fog: Three Solutions

Built-in Fan

DJI Goggles 3 have a built-in fan that creates airflow across the lenses. Turn this on before every cold-day flight. It prevents fogging by maintaining airflow that dissipates the moisture from your face before it condenses on the lens.

Anti-Fog Spray

Lens anti-fog spray (the same type used for ski goggles and diving masks) works on FPV goggle lenses. Apply a thin coat to the inner lens surface, buff gently. This creates a hydrophilic layer that causes moisture to spread into a thin film rather than fogging droplets.

Pre-Heat the Goggles

Keep goggles inside your jacket until 1-2 minutes before flying. Warm lenses don't fog as fast as cold ones because there's less temperature differential between your face and the lens surface.

The Upside of Winter FPV

Cold dense air provides more prop bite per RPM than summer air. Your quad will feel more responsive in cold conditions assuming the battery is pre-heated. Motors and ESCs run cooler. No insects flying into your drone. Most importantly: winter light in Poland creates incredible cinematic conditions - low sun, long golden hour, fog-filled bandy that look completely different from summer sessions.

Winter light at 3-4PM in Poland in December is 20-30 minutes of golden hour with dramatic shadows. If you're running DJI O4 Pro with D-Log M, this is the light you want. Pair it with ND4 for the right exposure.
