Why 5-Inch Is Still the Definitive Freestyle Size

The 5-inch freestyle quad has been the dominant format in FPV for nearly a decade. In 2026, that hasn't changed. The ecosystem - motors, frames, stacks, props, batteries - is the largest and most mature of any size class. Parts are widely available, prices are competitive, and community knowledge is deepest here. If you want to learn freestyle, race, or shoot cinematic footage, 5 inches is where you start.

The Three Budget Tiers

Tier Total Approx. VTX System Trade-off
Budget ~250€ Analog No HD recording, lowest barrier, learn faster
Mid ~450€ ArtLynk / HDZero HD quality at affordable entry
🏆 Premium ~750€+ DJI O4 / O4 Pro Best image quality, DJI ecosystem lock-in

Radio and goggles are not included in the above totals if you're building a first quad. If you already have both, subtract ~200€-300€ from each tier. Most pilots building their second or third quad already own a radio - the radio is a one-time investment that serves every build.

The Build Sequence

  1. Frame first. Choose your frame based on flying style (bando/freestyle vs. cinematic) and which VTX system you're running. This determines everything downstream.
  2. Match your stack to your frame. Confirm 30.5×30.5mm mounting. Decide F405 or F7 based on our earlier guide. Buy as a pre-matched FC+ESC unit - compatibility is guaranteed.
  3. Motors last in the category order. Choose KV based on voltage: 1750-1900KV for 6S freestyle, 2300-2450KV for 4S. Titan shaft and unibell are preferred for durability.
  4. Wire the stack before mounting to the frame. Solder motor leads and power harness with the stack free on your build mat. Easier access, less risk of damaging the frame with solder heat.
  5. Flash Betaflight, configure basics, bind receiver. Do not skip props-off motor test before arming with props on.
  6. Props-on bench test at 10-20% throttle on the bench before first flight. Check for vibrations, motor direction, prop orientation.

What to Skip (Common Overbuys)

GPS on a first freestyle build. You don't need return-to-home for bando. Skip it, save a UART and 15g.

Premium motors on a first build. You will crash hard. Buy mid-range motors you don't mind replacing. Once you're flying consistently, then invest in premium titanium-shaft motors.

Carbon fiber props. Bullnose carbon props shatter on first concrete contact. Polycarbonate props flex on impact and survive. Use PC props until you know exactly what you need.
