SpeedyBee F405 V5 vs V4 - They Changed the ESC Firmware and Pilots Are Furious
SpeedyBee F405 V5 replaces the iconic V4 with a 32-bit ESC running OX32 - proprietary closed-source firmware. Is this a problem? Full comparison and honest verdict.
V4 vs V5 - Full Comparison
What Genuinely Improved
🔧 FC Side - Genuinely Better
SpeedyBee upgraded to an ICM-42688-P gyro - lower noise floor, better high-frequency performance. You'll see this in cleaner blackbox data and potentially need less filtering, which translates to sharper motor response.
✅ 16MB built-in Blackbox replaces the microSD card slot. Practically better in every way - no more hunting for compatible cards, no mid-session Blackbox failures. Just works.
🔥 The ESC Controversy
The V4 ran BLHeli_S ESCs flashable to Bluejay - open source, community-maintained, configurable RPM frequencies. The V5 ESC uses 32-bit processors with OX32 firmware, which is proprietary closed-source software from OXBot. BLHeli_32 was discontinued in 2024. The active 32-bit open-source alternative is AM32. SpeedyBee chose neither.
⚠️ The performance difference in the air between Bluejay and OX32 for freestyle flying is minimal. You won't feel it on the sticks. What the community is reacting to is the principle: going from open-source firmware to proprietary, without a clear reason.
💡 If you want maximum ESC firmware control in 2026, look at stacks that ship with AM32 natively - the most future-proof open-source 32-bit ESC firmware currently in active development.
The Verdict
| Situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Building new, V5 in stock | ✅ Buy it. FC improvements are real. |
| Have a working V4 | ❌ Don't replace it. V4 works for years. |
| Want full firmware control | 🔍 Look for AM32-native stacks instead. |
Build Better, Build Cleaner
Whatever stack you choose, your build quality defines how the tune feels. A clean build on a quality frame with good vibration isolation lets any FC/ESC perform at its ceiling. The Ferrum 50 was designed to minimize mechanical noise into the gyro - which means whichever stack you mount, it gets the cleanest data possible to work with.
Build clean with the LUCEED Build Mat. Replace crashed parts fast with Ferrum 50 Arms, Top, Mid, and Bottom Plates - all in stock.
