FPV in Autumn: How Cold Weather Kills Your LiPo Performance and the Protocol That Keeps You Flying
Autumn in Poland means 5-15°C at the field. LiPo performance starts dropping measurably below 15°C. Here's the data on how much you lose and the exact pre-flight protocol that gets it back.
What Actually Happens to a LiPo in Cold
LiPo batteries operate optimally at around 35°C. The electrochemical reactions inside the cell slow down as temperature drops. Below 15°C you start noticing shorter flight times and increased voltage sag under load. Below 5°C the degradation becomes significant. At 0°C expect 20-30% capacity reduction. At -10°C this can exceed 50%.
Oscar Liang ran a documented test at approximately 10°C: the first pack of the day showed peak output power that was significantly lower at the start of flight, built up mid-flight as the cells self-heated from current draw, then declined as charge depleted. The takeaway: a cold LiPo warms up during flight, but the first 30-60 seconds of any cold-start pack are the worst-performing.
The practical danger: Cold LiPo + aggressive punch-out on first pack of the day = maximum voltage sag at the worst moment. Don't go full throttle immediately on a cold-start pack. Fly conservatively for the first 30 seconds while the cells self-heat.
The Autumn Pre-Flight Protocol
1. Transport Packs Warm
Keep batteries inside your car until you're ready to fly. Car cabin temperature even in autumn is typically 15-20°C. This alone puts you significantly ahead of leaving packs in your bag outside. Ideal pre-flight battery temperature is 25-35°C - warm pocket temperature.
2. Use a Battery Warmer or Heated Bag
Dedicated LiPo warmer bags connect to a power source and maintain battery temperature at 30-40°C. Ethix and similar brands offer these at reasonable prices. If you fly autumn/winter regularly, it's worth it. Field alternative: keep unused packs in an inside jacket pocket between flights.
3. Use the Previous Pack as a Hand Warmer
A pack that just finished a flight is warm from internal resistance and current draw. Hold it in your hands while the next pack is in the air. It keeps your hands functional for precise stick control and keeps the pack from cooling too fast between cycles.
4. Fly First Pack Conservatively
The first pack of the day - especially below 10°C - needs the first 30-60 seconds at mild throttle. Let the current draw heat the cells before demanding peak performance. This prevents the worst voltage sag from coinciding with your first big maneuver.
5. Check OSD Voltage More Often
Cold packs sag more under load. Your OSD voltage during high-throttle maneuvers will drop more than you're used to in summer. Watch it and land earlier than your usual cutoff. A cold-discharged pack develops internal resistance faster than a warm one.
Set your low-voltage alarm 0.1-0.2V higher than your summer setting when flying below 10°C. The pack has less effective capacity and the sag is more severe.
Autumn Visibility and Flying Conditions
Autumn fog and overcast conditions can affect FPV goggle performance. Fogging on the inside of goggle lenses happens when you come from a warm car into cold air. Anti-fog spray or a goggle with a built-in fan solves this. DJI Goggles 3 have a fan setting - use it on cold days.
Autumn is actually one of the best seasons for FPV in Poland: lower humidity than summer, no insects, lower temperatures keep electronics cooler and actually improve motor and ESC efficiency slightly. Dense cold air provides more prop bite than summer air. If you manage the battery temperature, autumn flying is often better than summer flying technically.
What to Check on the Frame
Carbon fiber isn't significantly affected by temperature in the -10°C to +40°C range. What is affected: TPU-printed parts (motor guards, camera mounts) become more brittle in cold. They don't fail suddenly, but they absorb impact less well. After autumn crashes, inspect TPU components more carefully than you would in summer.
