Props are the cheapest consumable in FPV and the most argued about. Here's what blade count, pitch, diameter, and material actually change in real flying - and what's marketing noise.
Blade Count: Bi-Blade vs Tri-Blade
This is the most visible prop choice and the most straightforward to understand:

For 5-inch freestyle bando flying: tri-blade is the default. The higher thrust-to-weight and better prop acceleration feel is what most freestyle pilots want. Bi-blade is worth trying for a different character - smoother, floatier, better efficiency per watt - but it's not the freestyle standard.
Pitch: The Variable Most Pilots Under-Tune
Pitch describes how far the prop would travel through air in one rotation (theoretically). Higher pitch = more aggressive, more thrust at higher RPM, more current draw. Lower pitch = smoother, more efficient, less aggressive power delivery.
Common 5-inch pitch designations: 5.1x4.1x3 means 5.1" diameter, 4.1" pitch, 3 blades. A 5.1x4.6x3 is the same diameter but more aggressive pitch. For freestyle: 4.0-4.6" pitch range is typical. Above 4.8" pitch gets aggressive and draws significant current.
Pitch choice interacts with your KV and flying style. Higher KV + lower pitch can produce similar thrust to lower KV + higher pitch. The feel is different: higher KV + lower pitch tends toward snappier acceleration. Lower KV + higher pitch tends toward smoother mid-range power. Neither is objectively better - they're different characters.
Material: Why Polycarbonate Beats Carbon for Bando
Polycarbonate (PC) props flex on impact and spring back. Carbon fiber props are stiffer and more efficient in clean air but shatter on concrete contact. For bando flying where prop strikes on walls, gates, and floors are part of the session, PC props survive and flex; CF props break and fragment.
The efficiency advantage of CF props is real but small - typically measured in a few percent of efficiency. For freestyle flying where you're not optimizing for maximum flight time per watt, this difference doesn't change anything meaningful. For long-range efficiency flying, CF props on a relatively crash-free build make sense.
Carbon fiber prop fragments are sharp and can be dangerous. Never stand in the plane of a spinning CF prop during ground testing. For indoor flying or any session where people are nearby, PC props are the correct choice purely on safety grounds, independent of crash survivability.
Prop Diameter: Slightly Larger Than Nominal
"5-inch" props for a 5-inch build typically run 5.1"-5.3" actual diameter. Slightly larger than the nominal frame size is standard - it maximizes disc area within the motor-to-motor spacing. Don't over-size: props that hit the frame on full flex are a problem. Check your frame's maximum prop diameter clearance before running larger than standard.
Brand and Quality: Does It Matter?
At the reputable brand tier (HQProp, Gemfan, DAL, T-Motor), prop quality consistency is high and differences between brands are minor. The choice between HQProp 5.1x4.6x3 and Gemfan 5.1x4.6x3 is not meaningful for most pilots. Buy whatever is in stock from a reputable brand and in the pitch/diameter range for your build.
Budget/no-name props have higher blade-to-blade pitch variability, which creates vibration that shows up in Blackbox data and can degrade tune quality. Stick to reputable brands and the variability cost disappears.
